DFDS Seaways PLC, Immingham Health and Safety Case Study 2022 – 2023

DFHS Halo Technologies Case Study

Part of the DFDS Group - Northern Europe's largest integrated shipping and logistics company, operating 30 routes, providing logistics services.

DFDS Seaways have achieved significant results in a short space of time.
• 70% reduction in LTIs
• Increased reporting by 132%
• Reduction in incidents by 20%
• Receiving the ‘Risk Team of the Year’ award from IIRSM

Jan 2022

Site wide audit of Health and Safety, processes and efficiencies were undertaken, with several key areas highlighted as ‘Areas of Concern’
These include – Vehicle Access Control, Pre-Use Checks, Impacts, GPS Tracking and Utilisation, along with Speed/Zoning and Pedestrian/Vehicle Safety.

March 2022

After 3 months of extensive consultation with several industry experts and suppliers, DFDS invite FTC Group to provide solutions.
These include – Asset Fleet Management with ‘OptaFleet’ and Pedestrian to Vehicle safety with the FTC Pedestrian Detection Camera system. DFDS Seaways PLC subsequentially installed both systems to one of their Terberg assets, at their Immingham site in the UK for a trial period.

April – Sept 2022 (6 month trial period)

Several system updates ensued as a result of feedback and discussion between DFDS Seaways and FTC Group UK
Vehicle slow down on pedestrian detection – pedestrian camera system is now able to slow the vehicle down on pedestrian detection via CanBus integration.
Utilisation and GPS reporting optimised – DFDS Seaways are now able to map, plot and study data on asset location, routing, and speeds, along with utilisation reporting.
Camera positioning optimised – Left hand side camera fitted to wing mirror, extends detection zone when trailers are attached to asset.
Asset to Pedestrian interactions linked to risk analysis reporting, where interactions happen on site, when, at what speeds, provides DFDS Seaways PLC with accurate data sets they can act on to improve efficiencies and safety at all levels.

Oct 2022 – Dec 2022

DFDS Group across the EU agree to roll out both systems across their MHE fleet, Immingham in the UK to be the first site with their entire fleet (circa 90 assets)

Jan 2023

Contract agreed and signed by both parties. Roll out begins at Immingham April 2023.

Efficiencies and Improvements

The introduction of OptaFleet Telematics and Pedestrian Detection Systems delivers:

  • Helps to reduce speeds across the Terminal, creating savings in fuel costs and lowering emissions.
  • Assists with monitoring of location vehicles and any impacts taken, also creating savings from defence of 3rd party Claims.
  • Pre-start up checks assist with reducing the cost of breakdowns through component failures, such as oil and water levels.
  • Reduce incidents, accidents and personal injury claims with the use of cameras and proximity detection and slowdowns.
  • Reduce infrastructure and vehicle damage from collisions (impact detector, GPS and Cameras).
  • Reduce maintenance repair down time, due to improved driver behaviour.
  • Reduce time spent on tasks which are currently done manually, such as vehicle location checks and hour meter readings.
  • Help in risk analysis across sites and MHE fleet, reducing incidents and increasing efficiencies.
  • Change the overall mindset of operators for the better.
